"I definitely feel good about the result of mediation. It was really, really difficult to have [the other side] make any concessions, but with [Monica] and Ashley's help . . . we got it done! [I] have run a few Marathons already. In Marathon, the term 'negative split' means the runner runs faster in the second half of the race than the first half. It is very hard to do. If life was a marathon, I would be right at the mid-point of the race, and the first half is already behind me. I know I can run the second half better and stronger, and maybe, I'll finish the race with 'negative split'.” ~Divorcing father of two.

I am originally from San Diego, California. Having worked my way up the coast, I am no stranger to change. I left San Diego to attend the University of California, Davis on a full scholarship. When I started college, I intended to study neurology but found myself drawn to the written word. I am still an avid reader as well as fascinated by the brain.

After college and before law school, I spent two years working multiple jobs. I worked at the Red Cross as a CPR instructor and I held an entry-level receptionist position at a worker’s compensation law firm where I regularly translated client meetings.  The lawyers at the firm were tenacious advocates. This experience placed me knee-deep in the legal world. In a very short amount of time, I was exposed to real-life advocacy and I knew where I wanted to put my efforts.

Next, I moved to Portland, Oregon where I obtained my law degree from Lewis & Clark Law School. While there, I was fortunate to obtain a clerkship at the Oregon Department of Justice followed by the Oregon Court of Appeals. At the Court of Appeals, I worked closely with the Honorable Rebecca Duncan who was an incredible mentor to me. Justice Duncan is now on the Oregon Supreme Court. During my work with her, I honed my legal research and writing skills, but even more incredible, I got to listen to the most brilliant judicial minds in the state discuss their legal analysis and share just how they think. This experience was probably the single most important part of my career because it gave me a peek behind the curtain, so to speak. From this, I discovered the power and the limits of the law.

DuBois Cary Law Group | Family Law & Divorce Attorneys Serving Seattle, Bellevue & Redmond WA

My next move was to the Seattle area. Unlike my other relocations, this move was uncharacteristically made to follow my husband’s career. I began working at DuBois Cary Law Group in 2017 and I haven’t looked back. I enjoy helping people problem-solve their disputes outside of court as well as fiercely advocating for my clients in court. I am proud of the work we do helping clients at a time when they need it most.  My caseload is entirely divorce, custody, parentage, child support, and parenting plan cases. I have had the opportunity to work on a range of complex family law issues including parenting cases involving abuse allegation, abandonment, and alienation as well as parentage actions. During my time here, I have been lucky to gain a good amount of courtroom experience here in King County. Because our office takes a team approach, I have also had the immense benefit of shadowing partner Monica Cary on many of her cases. As a result, I have experience with interesting financial issues including divorces with small business owners, multi-million-dollar financial settlements, stock award divisions.

Some of my personal case highlights include: modifying a parenting plan to obtain more parenting time for a loving dad who had historically very little time with his child; advocating for a devoted single mother in a modification action where the father was in and out of the child’s life; and working with a father accused of domestic violence to get him structured time with his kids and give the parties a more peaceful co-parenting relationship. I discovered that while I enjoy all aspects of family law, parenting plan modifications are a particular favorite of mine. A parenting plan modification is a complex proceeding involving a mixture of legal research and fact-based judgment calls. I find it extremely rewarding to successfully modify a parenting plan to better suit the children’s needs as circumstances have changed. Since modifications are difficult to obtain, it is important to carefully evaluate each case in order to determine the best course of action for each client.

In addition to my work at DuBois Cary, I volunteer at El Centro de la Raza, where I provide free family law consultations to low-income Spanish-speaking communities. I am also a member of the Latino Bar Association. As part of this association, I sit on the Judicial Evaluation Committee—a panel that interviews, rates, and evaluates judicial candidates in the state of Washington. When I am not practicing law, I enjoy spending time with my husband and enjoying all that the Pacific Northwest has to offer.
